Noémie Marsily In-Betweenness

  • 10. 10. – 10. 11. 2024
  • Centre for Illustration, Stritarjeva ulica

Noémie Marsily, an acclaimed Belgian illustrator, comic artist, and animator, presents in this exhibition a selection of original drawings and sketches from the comic Mohi (Memet)—a gentle and warm story about children meeting at a summer camp. In 2021, the book received the prestigious Bologna Ragazzi Award at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, and this year it was also published in Slovenian translation by Mladinska knjiga.

The author created the comic using coloured pencils; the lines are sometimes soft, at other times broken, and may even fade like memories, while the colours allow the summer light to shine through, awakening in us a gentle nostalgia for childhood and summer holidays.

In addition, the exhibition presents a selection of other works that bring us closer to the artist’s creative world, where comics, illustration, and animation intertwine and mutually enrich one another. The exhibition title In-Betweenness alludes both to the freedom of expression offered by different artistic practices and to certain ambiguities—elusive “blind spots” that cannot be fully expressed through image or language—as well as to the empty spaces between comic panels that leave room for interpretation.

Noémie Marsily (1983) is a multidisciplinary author and artist. She studied illustration at École supérieure des arts Saint‑Luc in Brussels. She has published several comics, including Fétiche with Les Requins Marteaux and Mohi, created together with the scriptwriter Isabella Cieli. Recently, she illustrated Mori, a graphic novel by Marie Colot (cotcotcot éditions). She has also directed several short animated films, including Around the Lake and I Don’t Feel Anything Anymore (co-directed with Carlo Roosens). Her latest short film, Whatever Moves Is Alive, is an intimate and poetic self-portrait.
Mohi is her first work translated into Slovenian.

Her artistic practice has developed over several years through projects and encounters across comics, illustration, animation, and teaching.
