Danijel Žeželj Like a Dog
- 16. 4. – 19. 5. 2024
- Centre for Illustration, Stritarjeva ulica
The exhibition Like a Dog presents a selection of original works and enlargements from the graphic novel Kao pas (Fraktura, 2023). The work is based on fragments of short stories by Franz Kafka: An Imperial Message, The Vulture, The Other, The Third Notebook in Octavo, The Truth about Sancho Panza, and The Wish to Be a Red Indian. The central part of the comic—created in the author’s favoured technique of black ink and white acrylic on paper—is the story A Hunger Artist. It tells of the profound distress of the archetypal misunderstood and suffering artist who, caught in conflict with the audience and with himself, ultimately dies in an abandoned circus cage—perishing like a dog. The title also alludes to one of Kafka’s most famous novels, The Trial. The exhibition is additionally prompted by the Slovenian translation of the graphic novel, published this year by VigeVageKnjige.
Daniel Žeželj (1966) is an internationally recognised Croatian comic artist, painter, and illustrator who also works in animation and multimedia performance. He is known for his expressive visual narratives, where dramatic storytelling—through dynamic montage and sequence—is infused with a wide range of emotions and a dark, intensifying atmosphere. His work is marked by a strong painterly approach, pronounced exposure, and the use of powerful contrasts, usually in black and white. His (often silent) comics are saturated with post-industrial architecture, chaotic urban landscapes, and dynamic figures that, in their intense presence and stormy movement, appear as mysterious and engaged antagonists.
He studied painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Zagreb. He has published more than twenty-five monographic publications and is the author of eight short animated films. He has collaborated with numerous international publishers, including DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Heavy Metal Magazine, Image Comics, Glénat, and Dargaud. He is also the co-founder of the Croatian publishing house and graphic workshop Petikat, which focuses on publishing authorial books and films, graphic and interior design, and organising workshops, exhibitions, performances, graffiti actions, and literary events. He lives and works between Brooklyn and Zagreb.
