Matija Medved In Its Own Time

  • 14. 5. – 5. 6. 2025
  • Kresija Gallery, Ljubljana

Matija Medved is one of the most prominent Slovenian illustrators. He is known for his narratively strong visual expression and distinctive style that combines elements of traditional and contemporary illustration. As an artist, he has a strong presence in magazine and book illustration as well as in the public space of the city. His illustrations and designs can be found in the foyer of the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, and in the visual identity of the renovated Rog Centre, which Medved co-designed as a member of the collective Ansambel.

This exhibition features works centred on the motif of flowers, in which he explores various artistic approaches. In Medved’s interpretation, flowers as an eternal artistic motif come to life in new artistic narratives. His works move between soft drawing and colour intensity, between analogue and digital techniques. Rather than just an aesthetic element, flowers become a dynamic artistic element that enters into a dialogue with space, texture, and typography.

Matija Medved (1990) is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Hinko Smrekar Plaque and Distinction, the TDC Award, three Brumen Awards, and the Silver and Gold Medals of the New York-based Society of Illustrators. His illustrations have been published in The New York Times, Time Magazine, and Bloomberg Businessweek, and included in 3×3 and American Illustration catalogues.
