Illustration Beyond Books
- 26. 2. – 21. 3. 2026
- Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana
Illustration has traditionally been associated with the book, but today it increasingly functions as an independent and autonomous artistic medium. The exhibition Illustration Beyond Books explores its expanded field of activity—from gallery and public spaces to functional objects, posters, comics, spatial installations, and digital media. The works on display present illustration as a flexible and open medium that retains its expressive power regardless of its format or context.
Illustrations on playing cards, clothing, and ceramics blur the boundary between artwork and functional object, entering everyday life. Poster production highlights its communicative power in public space, while comics reveal complex visual storytelling through rhythm and the sequencing of images. The exhibition also extends into three-dimensional space and the digital environment, where illustration gains physical presence, movement, and a temporal dimension.
Special emphasis is placed on author-driven projects in which illustration operates as an independent work of art, opening space for emotion, impressions, and interpretation. The exhibition thus offers an insight into illustration as a vibrant, diverse, and constantly evolving medium of contemporary visual culture.
